Yellow jersey: Charly Mottet.

Stage 11: Poitiers to Chaumeil, 255 kilometres, 35.838 kilometres an hour

Saturday, July 11

Mottet’s spell in yellow lasted one day – although he was soon to claim it back. His countryman and Système U team mate Martial Gayant, the French cyclocross champion, took this, the race’s second longest stage, with ease. Gayant was away in a break of 10 that reached the outskirts of Chaumeil with a lead of over 11 minutes and on the long climb to the finish the Frenchman surged to cross the line 38 seconds ahead of Laudelino Cubino of Spain, the only rider to give any measure of chase. By then the main bunch of riders had decided that with the Pyrenees only a day away they would save what energy they had left and arrived in Chaumeil in a long line of threes and fours with Mottet glad to lose the burden of yellow jersey.
